Brexit update, 8th January 2021

The Brexit page on HRI's website – hri.ie/Brexit – has been updated and has a ‘latest news’ section to host the latest advice from Government, including today’s temporary relaxation on border controls.

Following HRI’s travel advice issued before Christmas, there has not been movement back and forth from Britain for competition purposes, so we have yet to see what creases there are in the system.

Some Irish trainers have expressed a wish to race horses in Britain from next weekend (with only British-based handlers) and those experiences will help identify issues.

DAFM report that a number of transporters have sought clarity on the financial guarantee side of the new arrangements for VAT and Customs, and DAFM is collating all of their inquiries for the Brexit Unit to sort through next week, and respond.

Department officials are also keen that a short period passes before engaging in another information webinar for the industry – they feel it would be beneficial to get a sense of the real-world difficulties operators are experiencing in order to find solutions.
