ITBA National Hunt Seminar

Challenges & Opportunities facing the NH Breeding & Racing sector

Following a successful and well-attended webinar earlier this year, ITBA is hosting an in-person seminar on Monday 4th April in Hotel Minella, Clonmel to discuss all matters National Hunt related.

A stellar panel has been secured for what promises to be an afternoon of discussion and lively debate. The seminar will concentrate on the challenges and opportunities facing the National Hunt industry. David Jennings, Racing Post will MC the event and the panel will discuss a number of key talking points.

NH Fillies Bonus Scheme Through the continued support of Horse Racing Ireland and Weatherbys, the national hunt fillies bonus scheme has grown from strength to strength and changed the face of mare’s race program. Last year was its most successful to date with €495,000 in winning bonus paid out and a 73%-win rate of eligible races. The number of fillies entered into the scheme for 2022 has also grown ensuring the future of the initiative. We will look at what more can and should be done to ensure the viability of fillies in training. The IRE Incentive scheme is also making strides with sales vouchers, enabling and encouraging the continued buying of Irish-breds at Irish sales

Impact of French-bred While Irish-bred and Irish-trained horses succeeded at Cheltenham last week, with 15 Irish-bred winners the number of French-bred winners (9) and contenders will not have gone unnoticed. Should this be a cause for concern?

7lb allowance The 7lb mare allowance has long been a hot topic. Following the success of Honeysuckle the debate around the mares allowance raises its head once more.

Current state of National Hunt Breeding & Racing The panel will discuss the changes in trends of National Hunt breeding and racing. The notable evolution of the sector in the last number of years has seen a drop in the number of entries. Prizemoney, return of horses in training and the NH race pattern will be addressed. Point-to-Point racing, the impact of Brexit, recent sales analysis and the soundness of our stock will also be discussed. National Hunt stallions, number of mares returned/covered, polarisation will add to a packed agenda.

In addition, the event will provide breeders and attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with industry stake holders prior to the commencement of the seminar. Stakeholder representatives will be there to answer any relevant questions or queries breeders may have. We encourage attendees to arrive early to avail of this opportunity

To register for the event and to submit any topics you wish discussed please email Una Tormey to or call the ITBA HQ on 045-877543

We look forward to seeing you in Hotel Minella on Monday 4th April.
