JUMPING INTO THE FUTURE

- The Challenges Facing Irish National Hunt Breeding

ITBA and a panel of Industry Experts hosted a National Hunt Seminar at The Lord Bagenal on Wednesday 17th January 2024. The event was well-attended by breeders, consignors, industry enthusiasts and international guests, with over 270 in attendance to hear discussion on the important topic.

Host Lorna Fowler was joined by a stellar panel of Anthony Bromley, co-director of Highflyer Bloodstock; Walter Connors, Dungarvan based vet and Sluggara Farm consignor; along with Bertrand le Metayer, French Racing Advisor & Bloodstock Agent. Joining them was Goffs Agent and Rathmore Stud’sPeter Molony; Charles O’Neill, CEO Irish Thoroughbred Marketing; and finally Director of Horses In Training with Tattersalls Ireland and Director of Irish Point to Point Services- P2P.ie Richard Pugh.

The seminar titled ‘JUMPING INTO THE FUTURE - The Challenges facing Irish National Hunt Breeding’ focused on the issues facing the current National Hunt marketplace, the National Hunt race programme, the influence of French breds and meeting marketplace demands. The panel talked through their experiences and the evolution of National Hunt horses, sales and races over the past number of years, as well as comparing the Irish system to UK and French models. Questions welcomed from the audience brought up many important points about where the industry will see itself in the next few years, different supports available for breeders, the possibility of developing an earlier race programme.
