Industry Educational Showcase for Ministers

ITBA was delighted to be a part of the recent industry showcase, arranged by Horse Racing Ireland and Equuip held at The Curragh Racecourse on Monday 29th November.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris and Minister of State at Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine Martin Heydon were given an insight into the many educational and career pathways within the racing and breeding sector.

Shane O’Dwyer ITBA CEO, highlighted some of the educational projects undertaken by the ITBA in recent years, the continued effort on the part of all stakeholders to ensure relevant upskilling opportunities were widely available and focused on the need to support future generations of breeders.

ITBA's Kerry Ryan further highlighted the close working relationship ITBA has with the different Department Offices when hosting courses like the recent Stud Farm Safety Workshop as well as the successful Climate Action Webinar held during the summer, which was kindly introduced by Minister Pippa Hackett.

The educational programme run by the ITBA is indebted to the continued and constant support of the Department Offices together with a wide number of respected industry professionals who give up their time freely to contribute to the growing number of courses put on throughout the calendar year.

Kerry also referenced the success of the Next Generation Apprentice Scheme. Since its inception in 2009 the scheme has provided both educational and practical support to school leavers and graduates alike with varying levels of industry experience and work placements.

Joining the ITBA on the day was former graduate of the scheme Leona Hughes. Leona, who completed her apprenticeship in 2016 is now Marketing Executive with Punchestown Racecourse and she spoke with Minister Harris and Minister Heydon about her experiences and pathway to her current position within the industry.

The ITBA was in good company on the day as the showcase was represented by an impressive number of varying industry stakeholders, each displaying a flavor of the further education and career opportunities on offer.

A thanks to Horse Racing Ireland and Equuip for hosting this great initiative.
