Influenza testing of animals travelling to the UK for racing or bloodstock sales – sample submission guidelines – June 2019

  • The required sample type is a Nasopharyngeal Swab in Virus Transport Medium. If required, sampling material is provided free of charge by the IEC. Please contact the Virology Laboratory on 045 866 266 or
  • All samples MUST be accompanied by an IEC sample submission form (available on our website). The submission form must be completed in a legible manner stating the animal’s full name as you wish for it to appear on the report, it is also important to provide the date the sample was taken. The form must be signed by the veterinarian who took the sample from the animal.
  • The cut off time for the receipt of samples is 10.00am each day. Strict adherence to this is necessary to ensure that sample processing commences same day. Any samples received after the cut off time are unlikely to be processed until the next working day.
  • If dropping off samples at the weekend or on a bank holiday, please ensure that the technician on call is notified either by calling or texting the Virology On-Call mobile 087 995 9190.
  • Sampling timeframes are dictated by the BHA and the sales companies, all clients are advised to be aware of these timeframes and organise their sampling accordingly.
  • The majority of samples are processed and reported within 24-48 hours. Please note that a <24hr turnaround cannot be guaranteed.
  • If large batches of samples are being submitted, please provide advance notice to the Virology Laboratory on 045-866266 or
  • All test reports are issued to the submitting vet/practice by email. It is possible to email results to a third party - provided you supply us with the email address - but this instruction must be made clear in writing on the sample submission form submitted with the samples. Failure to comply with the above instructions may cause delays in sample processing and reporting.
