The Challenges Facing Irish National Hunt Breeding

Join ITBA and a Panel of Industry Experts at The Lord Bagenal, Co Carlow, on Wednesday 17th January 2024 for our National Hunt Seminar.

Host Lorna Fowler (Trainer and breeder, Rahinston Farm & Stud) will be joined by a stellar panel of Anthony Bromley, co-director of Highflyer Bloodstock with over 30 years experience in the industry and having sourced high-profile winners including Noble Yeats, Kauto Star, Sprinter Sacre, and Altior; Walter Connors, Dungarvan based vet and Sluggara Farm consignor whose list of graduates is headed by 2016 Gold Cup winner Don Cossack; along with Bertrand le Metayer, Racing Advisor & Bloodstock Agent who sent some of the first French top jumpers to Ireland and the UK such as Queen Mother victors Klairon and Edredon Bleu.

Joining them are Goffs Agent and Rathmore Stud’s Peter Molony, who has produced top class National Hunt horses of Bobsworth, Sir Gerhard, Telmesomethinggirl and multiple Gr1 heroine Honeysuckle; also Charles O’Neill, CEO Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Horse Racing Ireland subsidiary promoting Ireland as a leading source of thoroughbreds; and finally Director of Horses In Training with Tattersalls Ireland and Director of Irish Point to Point Services- Richard Pugh for what promises to be an evening of discussion and lively debate.

The seminar titled ‘JUMPING INTO THE FUTURE - The Challenges facing Irish National Hunt Breeding’ will focus on the issues facing the current National Hunt marketplace. The seminar will cover a variety of challenges and opportunities with the panel discussing the current status of Irish National Hunt breeding and racing, compare quality versus quantity, the influence of French breds and meeting marketplace demands.

In addition, the event will provide breeders and attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with industry stakeholders throughout the day. Doors will open at 6pm and the seminar will commence at 6.30pm sharp. We would encourage attendees to arrive early to avail of this networking opportunity. Light refreshments will also be available for all attendees.

Commenting on the seminar ITBA Chairman Cathy Grassick said: “I am excited at the prospect of hearing from our expert panel on all issues relevant to our industry. This is a crucial time for the market and an important event for everyone to voice their opinion.”
